brazaletes fluor! un DIY en 10 minutos / neon bangles! a 10 minutes DIY

Nunca lo hubiera pensado, pero sí, me he unido a la fiebre de los colores flúor. Tenía un par de brazaletes de plástico que ni recuerdo de dónde había sacado y unos trozos de estas cuerdas de colores chillones. Con unas tijeras y la pistola de silicona caliente, enrosca, enrosca, enrosca...y listo! en 10 minutos me hice dos de estos brazaletes para darle chispa a unos shorts y una camiseta blanca. Hablando de shorts, si quieres aprender cómo reciclar unos vaqueros y hacerte unos, aquí tienes un tutorial muy fácil. 

I´d never believe it, but yes, I have joined the neon fever. I dont´remember where did i get them but I had this couple of plastic bracelets and a few pieces of neon rope. Using scissors and a hot glue gun, roll, roll, roll... and you are done! in 10 minutes I made ​​two of these bracelets to spice up my denim shorts-white tank top outfit. Oh, and speaking of shorts, if you want to learn how to recycle your jeans, here's a very easy tutorial.

succulent terrarium DIY

Después de unos días paseando entre dunas llenas de suculentas, se me ocurrió hacer un terrarium para tener un recuerdo de estas vacaciones. Siempre me han llamado la atención las suculentas y los cactus por sus formas y texturas, pero además son las plantas perfectas si no tienes demasiado tiempo para riegos y cuidados diarios. Os cuento cómo lo he hecho:

After a few days wandering through dunes full of succulents, I decided to make a terrarium to remember these holidays. I have always been struck by succulents and cactus shapes and textures, and they are the perfect plants if you don´t have too much time for irrigation and daily care. Here´s how i did:

Materiales/ Materials

• plantas suculentas/ succulent plants
• un recipiente de cristal/ a glass container, vase or similar
• sustrato (si es especial para cactus y suculentas, mejor)/ substrate (better if special for succulents)
• arena, gravilla u otro material para drenaje (yo he usado arcilla expandida: gracias Rosa!)/ sand, gravel or other draining material (I´ve used expanded clay, thanks Rosa!)
• piedras, conchas u otros objetos para decorar/ stones, shells or other decorative items

En el recipiente, coloca primero una capa del material que hayas elegido para proporcionar un buen drenaje. En mi caso, unas bolitas de arcilla expandida. Después, pon una capa de sustrato adecuada para la cantidad y tamaño de las plantas. Las mías eran muy pequeñitas, así que con unos 10cm, ha sido suficiente. Piensa en la composición que quieres obtener y ,con cuidado, trasplanta las suculentas al nuevo recipiente. Riega un poco la composición y decora los huecos que quedan con piedrecitas, conchas...Yo quería un recuerdo de mis vacaciones en Galicia, así que he colocado unos erizos de mar que recogí allí ¡y han quedado muy bien!

In the glass container, place first a layer of material you have chosen to provide good drainage. In my case, some expanded clay pellets. Then put a layer of substrate suitable for the number and size of plants. Mine were tiny, so a layer about 10cm deep was enough. Think about the composition you desire and carefully transplant the succulents to the new container. Water them and decorate the gaps with stones, shells or other little objects. I wanted a souvenir from my holidays in Galicia, so I placed some sea urchins I collected there, and I think it looks pretty cool!

pant skirt to boyfriend shorts PHOTOTUTORIAL

Hace días que tenía pendiente hacer algo con esta falda pantalón. La tengo hace mil años, y no me gustaba ya la forma, así que le he dado el cambio que necesitaba...unos shorts estilo boyfriend!
I had this in mind for days now, I had to do something with this pant skirt. I have had it for ages, and I didn´t like it anymore, so I gave it the change it was needing... boyfriend shorts!

He utilizado otros shorts que tenía como referencia y he marcado el largo con un jaboncillo. He añadido dos marcas más a tres y seis centímetros, para las vueltas del bajo.
I´ve used another shorts I had to mark the length. I´ve added another mark three cm and the last one, six cm from the first mark, so I could do the hem.

He cortado las patas del pantalón por la marca más baja y les he dado la vuelta.
I´ve cut the pants legs where the lower mark wass and then, I´ve turn the pants inside out.

Como eran extra-anchos, he tenido que estrecharlos, pero tranquis más fácil de lo que parece. Te los pruebas del revés y vas marcando con alfileres por la parte interior por donde quieres que queden. Luego, los coses, también del revés, siguiendo las marcas.

As the pant skirt was extra-wide, I had to narrow it, but no worries, it´s easier than it seems. You try them on (inside out) and pin them to fit. Then, you need to sew the new seam following the pins line.

Corta lo que sobra y remata con una costura en zig-zag. Dales la vuelta de nuevo.
Now, cut the excess of fabric and finish off with zigzag stitch. Turn the pants inside out again.

El último paso es hacer un dobladillo hacia afuera. Para ello, se dobla el bajo dos veces siguiendo las marcas que habías hecho al principio (3 y 6cm). Cose un par de puntadas ocultas en los laterales para asegurar el bajo.
The last step is doing the hem. Just fold the pant legs twice, following the marks you did at the begining (3 and 6cm). Sew a couple of hidden stitches to the sides to secure the hem.

Y pantalones nuevos para ir a patinar! ¿Fácil, no? Espero que hayas empezado bien la semana...
And new shorts for roller skating! Easy, isn´t it? Hope your week started out great...

dip-dye shirt DIY

Hace ya unas semanas estaba ojeando un número de la revista MujerHoy, y me encontré un reportaje sobre Isabel Marant. El caso es que había unas fotos de una de sus colecciones, creo que la de primavera-verano 2012, llena de prendas casual y tye die, degradados...El artículo decía algo así como que las prendas de la firma eran tan caras porque los procesos para lograr el aspecto usado y ajado de los tejidos eran costosos y complejos. La verdad es que lo entiendo, me ha costado años que mis vaqueros favoritos (que mi abuela odia), tengan ese aspecto, no ajado, sino desgastado y agujereado, jaja. Sin desmerecer para nada el trabajo de la marca, decidí que era hora de hacerme mi propia prenda versión low cost. Así le doy uso esta temporada a una vieja camisa blanca que tenía olvidada en el armario y termino un sobre de tinte que me quedaba del taller de shibori.
A few weeks ago I was reading an issue of MujerHoy magazine, and I found an article about Isabel Marant. There were some photos of one of her collections, I think it was spring-summer 2012, full of casual clothing and tye die outfits... The article said something like the designer´s clothes were so expensive because the processes they use to achieve that used and worn look were expensive and complex. I have to say I understand it, it took me years to get my favorite jeans (which my grandmother hates) to look not worn, but worn out and riddled with holes, haha. Without belittling the designer´s work, I decided it was time to make my own low cost version. This way, I might give use this season to an old forgotten white shirt and finish a dye box I still had from the shibori workshop

En lugar de hacer nudos, ni atar la camisa, ni estas cosas del shibori, preferí experimentar con el dip-dye o degradado. No obtuve un resultado de líneas perfectas, creo que porque el recipiente que utilicé no era lo suficientemente ancho, pero aún así me ha gustado el resultado. El truco está en sumergir el tejido en el tinte, tantas veces como tonos queráis obtener del color. Yo he hecho tres inmersiones para obtener tres tonos de azul: la primera, unos 2/3 de la prenda, unos 5 minutos. La segunda, una zona más pequeña, otros 5 minutos. La tercera, una parte más pequeña aún, otros 5 minutos. Así, la parte que se ha sumergido 3 veces es la que queda más oscura y así sucesivamente. No sé si ha quedado muy claro, pero en las fotos se ve más fácil.
Instead of making knots, tie the shirt, or other shibori techniques, I chose to experiment with dip-dye. I did not get a great result with perfect lines, I think because the bowl I used was not wide enough, but I still liked the result. The trick is to dip the fabric in the dye, so many times as shades of color you want to get. I have made it three times to get three shades of blue: the first, about 2/3 of the garment, for 5 minutes. The second, a smaller area, 5 minutes. The third, a smaller part, another 5 minutes. Thus, the part that has been dipped 3 times is the darkest one and so on. I hope I´ve explained myself, but anyway, you will see it easier in the photos.

 Nota: no olvidéis usar guantes, proteger la superficie donde vayáis a trabajar y seguir las instrucciones del fabricante. Ah, y tened cuidado de no salpicar la zona de la prenda que no queréis que se tiña. Por lo demás, pan comido.
Note: don´t forget using gloves, covering the work surface and following the dye manufacturer instructions. Oh, and be careful not to splash the part of the garment you don´t want to get dyed. Otherwise, easy-peasy.

geometric print hobo bag DIY

El otro día, sacando la ropa y los zapatos de verano, apareció un bolso del año de Maricastaña que ni me acordaba que tenía. Mientras lo miraba, pensando si lo tiraba o qué hacía con él, se me ocurrió una idea. Con la cantidad de ropa y complementos con estampados geométricos que he visto este año en todas partes estaba claro, iba a ser carne de DIY.

The other day, I was pulling out my summer wardrobe when I found an old hobo bag I have had for ages. While looking at it and deciding whether throwing it away or not, I came up with an idea. After seeing so many geometric prints on clothes and accesories this season, it was clear to me...this was meant to be my next DIY.

MATERIALES / SUPPLIES

un bolso viejo de polipiel / an old fake leather bag, tote or whatever you wanna revamp

pintura acrílica / acrylic paint

imprimación (opcional) / primer (optional)

pincel / brush

washi tape o cinta de pintor / washi tape or masking tape

Tan fácil como decidir el diseño que quieres en tu bolso y definirlo con washi tape. Yo he usado washi tape porque la cinta de pintor es muy ancha y quería líneas más estrechas, de unos 5-6mm. Una vez tienes el diseño, sólo tienes que pintar los huecos con pintura acrílica o similar, un pincelito y algo de paciencia. Ah, y tu música favorita para acompañar ;) Si no sabes seguro si la pintura agarrará bien al material del bolso, puedes dar una capa de imprimación antes de aplicar la pintura. Además, así los colores serán más intensos que si pintas directamente con acrílico. Cuando esté bien seco, retira las cintas con cuidado ¡y ya está! A mi me ha costado acabarlo como tres horas, pero la mayor parte del tiempo la he dedicado a decidir el diseño y esperar a que se secara la pintura. Fácil, ¿no? Un consejo: siempre asegúrate de que la cinta está bien pegada a la superficie o la pintura se colará por debajo y las líneas no quedarán limpias.

It´s as easy as designing the print of your like and defining it with masking tape. I´ve used washi tape because the masking tape I have is too wide and I wanted narrow lines, about 5-6mm. Once you have your design, you only need to paint it with acrylic paint or similar, a brush and a little bit of patience. Ah, and your fave playlist ;) If you are not sure if the paint will work on the surface your want to paint, you can paint a coat of primer before. That way, the colours will be also more intense and vibrant. When dry, carefully remove the masking tape, and you are done! I spent around three hours to get it done, but most part of the time I was designing my print and waiting for the paint to dry. Easy, isn´t it? TIP: always make sure the masking tape is perfectly stuck to the surface or the paint will slip and the lines won´t be clean.

Una tarde entretenida y bolso nuevo para este verano...no está mal ¿eh?

Cierta persona acostumbra a decirme que soy un poco Lola Flores...¡y a mi me encanta! No sé si el hecho de que mi abuela me haya llamado toda la vida "gitanita" tendrá algo que ver, pero siempre me han encantado los lunares y los estilismos un tanto folclóricos...jaja. Así que hoy he hecho una lista de artículos que seguro que encajarían perfectamente en mi casa y en mi armario. ¿No os empieza a apetecer que llegue un poco la caló? ;)

shibori

Hace poco estuve en un taller de shibori, impartido por Marian, de Artelar (hola, Marian!). Fue una experiencia muy divertida y enriquecedora, aunque reconozco que yo necesito más paciencia para trabajar estas técnicas ;) No me había planteado hablar sobre el tema en el blog hasta que me he dado cuenta de la cantidad de prendas tye-die que se ven este año en las tiendas. El tye-die no es más que el nombre que se da a algunas de estas técnicas de shibori en Occidente.

I recently attended a shibori workshop, taught by Marian, from Artelar (hi, Marian!). It was very fun and rewarding, although I have to say that I need more patience to work on these techniques;) I wasn´t taking about it here in the blog until I realized there are lots of tye-die clothes in the stores this season. Tye-die is just the name given to some of these shibori techniques in Western countries.

El shibori es una técnica japonesa utilizada para teñir tejidos que se conoce desde el siglo VIII.  Consiste en diseñar un patrón o estampado a base de bloquear o reservar partes de la tela mediante costuras, dobleces, compresión...etc. De esta forma, cuando se sumerge el tejido en el tinte, este no puede llegar a las zonas bloqueadas y podemos obtener diseños tan espectaculares como los de los tradicionales kimonos.

Shibori is a japanese technique used for fabric dyeing that is known since 8th century. It involves the design of a pattern by blocking or reserving parts of the fabric by stitching, folding, compressing... etc.. Thus, when the fabric is dipped in the dye, this can not reach the blocked areas and we can get such spectacular designs as those in traditional kimonos.

En el taller de shibori no aspirábamos a tanto, pero sí aprendimos algunas de las técnicas más comunes y sus nombres impronunciables: Tegumo, Orinui, Mokumenui, Makinui, Makiage, Koboushi, Itajame, Tesuji... y pasamos un par de tardes muy entretenidas. Aquí os enseño algunas de las muestras que hice.

We didn´t expected that much from the shibori workshop, but we learned some of the most common techniques and their unpronounceable names: Tegumo, Orinui, Mokumenui, Makinui, Makiage, Koboushi, Itajame, Tesuji... and we spent a couple of quite busy evenings. I show you here some of

Paradojas de la vida, la geometría no era lo mío en la escuela, y ya veis, ahora la encuentro de lo más inspiradora...He encontrado millones de ejemplos en la red estos días y me ha parecido divertido jugar a las parejas con ellos ¿qué os parecen?.A mí ya se me han ocurrido un par de ideas...me voy corriendo a buscar mi caja de acuarelas!
